How Candidate Assessment Works
Candidates who seek public office can voluntarily take the Innovative Public Leadership Assessment (IPLA). This is how you benefit:
What the Assessment Measures
The IPLA is a 323-question psychometric evaluation covering:
- Leadership Competencies (84 questions): Integrity, decision-making, emotional intelligence, transparency, public service motivation, critical thinking, communication
- Policy & Governance Orientation (64 questions): Where the candidate stands on term limits, campaign finance, lobbying, stock trading, fiscal responsibility, and more
- Leadership Orientation (135 questions): Psychological traits including self-assessment, interpersonal strategy, empathy, humility, and openness to feedback
- Behavioral & Scenarios (25 open-ended): Real examples and situational responses in the candidate's own words
- IPLA Signature Questions (15): Core stance on accountability, transparency, and structural reform
What You See on a Published Profile
When a candidate publishes their results, you can view:
- An overall competency score and band (Exemplary, Strong, Proficient, Developing, or Emerging)
- Individual scores across all 32 measured domains
- Their governance philosophy on 16 policy topics
- Their behavioral responses in their own words (how they handle crises, ethical dilemmas, donor pressure, etc.)
- Whether they even chose to participate (candidates who refuse are visible too)
Why This Matters
- Today, most voters rely on campaign ads, party labels, and media narratives to evaluate candidates
- The IPLA provides objective, nonpartisan data about how a candidate thinks, leads, and makes decisions
- Candidates who participate demonstrate a willingness to be evaluated transparently
- Candidates who refuse to participate send a signal too
- Your poll responses and ratings directly influence what issues candidates are measured against
- After election, you can track whether their votes align with what they promised and what their community expressed
